We left Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at 6am and headed up the mountain. We surprised ourselves by getting to Orrison in 2 hours. After refreshments we continued up in the clouds until we reached the refreshments van near the summit. After a brief stop we hit the summit, still in clouds but the sun was trying to break through. We turned a bend in the path and there was blue sky all around! Almost as if there is different weather in Spain.
We took the alternate route to Roncesvalles and enjoyed the stunning views. Carrying on through the woods after Roncesvalles we finally made it to Espinal-Auzperri after a marathon 11 hours. Fi and I are amazed at Julia and Sue’s tenacity and resilience as it was there first day walking and it was huge.
We’re staying in a dormitory for €15 per bed. Hostel Haizea.
